She says these kinds of scams often use fake accounts with fictitious or stolen profiles and images on popular dating sites.

Some may even create phony dating sites to lure in potential victims. She adds that in the early stages of this type of scam, the correspondence can range from friendly and flirty to heavy and romantic. Once the target has been “groomed,” the scammer may propose chatting offline or profess feelings that seem inordinately deep for this kind of connection.

They may even offer to visit if the victim can help cover their travel costs, but they cancel those travel plans at the last minute. These tactics will often include a fake, but plausible, financial need, which will later be followed by other requests for money. AARP says to be cautious of what information you share online, and anytime someone asks for money and you don’t really know them, it is safest to consider it a possible scam.
