A dating scan is an ultrasound examination which is performed in order to establish the gestational age of the pregnancy. Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures. Dating scans are usually recommended if there is doubt about the validity of the last menstrual period. By 6 to 7 weeks gestation the fetus is clearly seen on trans-vaginal ultrasound and the heart beat can be seen at this early stage 90 to beats per minute under 6 to 7 weeks, then to beats per minute as the baby matures.
Ultrasounds performed during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy are generally within 3 – 5 days of accuracy.

A first trimester early pregnancy and dating ultrasound is an examination you have during the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. Due to the size of the developing structures and embryo, it is uncommon to perform an ultrasound before 5 weeks gestation 5 weeks after the start of your last menstrual period. Ultrasound is not consistently able to confirm viability and fetal heart activity prior to 6 weeks gestation, so unless there is an urgent need to have an early pregnancy and dating scan earlier most of these ultrasounds are performed after 6 weeks and ideally at 8 weeks for dating purposes.
Urgent cases may still be performed earlier, please discuss this with your referring doctor. Your ultrasound may be performed transabdominally or transvaginally. Transvaginal ultrasound involves placing a thin transducer slightly thicker than a tampon into the vagina. The transvaginal ultrasound can offer extra detail to the examination as it allows the ultrasound probe to come into close proximity to the uterus womb.
A transvaginal scan is optional for all patients and it is your decision whether to proceed with that part of the examination. Ultrasound, both transabdominal and transvaginal, is considered to be safe during the first trimester of pregnancy. Your examination will be performed by a sonographer. Upon being taken into the examination room the sonographer will introduce themselves, confirm your identity and examination.

We ask that you come with a full bladder for this scan as it usually allows us to get the best possible picture of the baby. If you decide to go ahead with this optional screening test you will be offered a scan between 12 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days ideally 12 weeks.

This combined test is an extremely accurate non-invasive screening test available to help identify a fetus at risk for Down syndrome as well as other chromosomal abnormalities and some major structural abnormalities. The sensitivity of this only recently eclipsed by NIPT. An ultrasound screening test is non-invasive and does not have any side effects or complications. The only way to diagnose Down syndrome or other chromosomal abnormalities is by having a diagnostic test — either a CVS or an amniocentesis — and testing the fetal cells.
These tests are invasive and require a needle to be passed into the maternal abdomen and uterus and therefore carry a small risk of miscarriage. Many patients do not wish to have the diagnostic test because of the small risk of miscarriage and prefer to have the ultrasound screening test, the NT scan, to help them decide if they wish to proceed to testing the fetus. Unfortunately, while NT combined with the first trimester biochemical blood test is a very accurate screening test available for chromosomal abnormalities, it will not detect all fetuses affected with Down syndrome or other chromosomal abnormalities.
Chromosomal abnormalities occur when there is a change in the number or structure of the chromosomes. Normally we have 46 chromosomes, 23 pairs numbered and a pair of sex chromosomes. Boys have XY and girls have XX. The most common chromosomal abnormality seen at birth is Down syndrome. In Down syndrome, an extra copy of chromosome 21 is present, giving a total of 47 chromosomes.
To be certain your NT scan is performed correctly, it is important that you have your scan performed at an accredited practice. A NT computer package was developed by the London Fetal Medicine Foundation in the s and was based on more than
